 Varadero is a very popular resort area in Cuba. In fact, this is one of of the largest resort areas that you can find in the Caribbean. Most people that live around Varadero call it Playa Azul. This is Spanish for “blue beach.” This is a very fitting name, because the beaches in this area are amazing. Most people love this area because of the warm water and the nice weather. In fact, the weather stays so nice here that you can choose to visit Varadero any time of the year and still lay out in the sun.The first time Varadero was noted in history was back in 1555. This place was first just used as a type of dry dock. There was also a salt mine that was in Varadero that remained open until 1961. Although this area was talked about way back in 1555, it was not until the end of 1887 that the city was actually founded. Ten families had obtained the right to build there vacation home there. Ever since then, Varadero has been a vacation hot spot. Even when you look at Varadero today, you should note that it is mostly a tourist town. That is because it has over 20 km of white sandy beaches and crystal clear water. In 1915, the first hotel opened up in Varadero, and it was called “Varadero.” After the hotel went up, it was not long until Club Nautico went up as well. Varadero's biggest resource today is still its beaches. However, there are some other natural attractions that you can find there that people love as well. Things like caves and other things are located all over. There are also a lot of historical attractions as well. A lot of people also come to this area because of the great water sports that you can play. Some of the main attractions to the water are scuba diving and deep sea fishing. However, yachting is a pretty popular pass time in Varadero as well. Overall, Varadero gets about 500,000 visitors in a single year. The number of United States tourists is growing but still very low. That is because of the restrictions that are in place to make it illegal for United States citizens to go to Cuba as tourists. |
